What is Discord?
Discord is a voice, video, and text chat app that’s used by tens of millions of people ages 13+ to talk and hang out with their communities and friends.
People use Discord daily to talk about many things, ranging from art projects and family trips to homework and mental health support. It’s a home for communities of any size, but it’s most widely used by small and active groups of people who talk regularly.
The vast majority of servers are private, invite-only spaces for groups of friends and communities to stay in touch and spend time together. There are also larger, more open communities, generally centered around specific topics such as popular games like Minecraft and Fortnite. Users have control over whom they interact with and what their experience on Discord is.
People love Discord because it’s a home for all their communities and groups of friends. It’s a place where they can be themselves and spend time with other people who share their interests and hobbies. Conversations on Discord are driven by the people you choose and the topics you choose to talk about.

PERFORMANCE COHORT FAQs

WHEN ARE THE PERFORMANCE COHORTS?

PERFORM classes are Monday through Friday, July 14th – August 3th.

There is an opening circle event on July 16th that we encourage participants to attend, and the final performances and sharings of work created by each track are the evenings of August 2 + 3, plus a matinee performance August 3. The final performance will be followed by a closing cast  party.

ARE THERE LEVELS TO RESEARCH WEEK?

To choose your level, consider the kind of experience you would like to have this summer. The festival ideally offers you a balance between challenges and growth, where the pacing of classes feels fast enough to keep you engaged, but spacious enough that you feel like you can comfortably pick up steps while also having brain space to work on larger ideas and concepts. If you’re unsure, talk to a teacher or instructor who knows your dancing well, and have a conversation about what level you would thrive in.

During the first few days of the festival, your teachers may suggest a level change if they see you struggling with pacing or concepts in class or rehearsal.

DO THE PERFORMANCE COHORTS HAVE AGE LIMITS?

The Professional, Intermediate, and Beginner cohorts are designed as adult programs, so we set our age minimum to 18 years of age. The youth cohort is aimed to reach participants ages 13–18.

If you do not meet the age minimum but still feel this opportunity is where you need to be, please feel free to reach out to Shirley Wong, our Operations Manager, at operations@velocitydancecenter.org

HOW DO I ACCESS CLASSES AS A DROP-IN PARTICIPANT?

Morning technique classes and Intermediate evening technique classes are open for drop-ins. Registration for these classes will be through Salesforce, where drop-in participants can register and pay. Registration for Drop-In classes will open on June 20.

RESEARCH COHORT FAQs

WHEN IS RESEARCH WEEK?

RESEARCH intensives + classes are Monday – Saturday, August 3rd – 11th.

There is an opening circle event + jam on August 3rd that we encourage participants to attend, plus a closing circle + jam on August 14th.

ARE THERE LEVELS IN RESEARCH WEEK?

Research week is designed to be all-levels and intergenerational. Classes, intensives and jams will contain participants who are beginning their journey in improvisational practices and forms, alongside participants who are deeply experienced lifelong practitioners. In this way, offerings feel more like laboratories for research and exchange, rather than level-specified learning spaces.

DOES RESEARCH WEEK HAVE AGE LIMITS?

Research week is intended for participants 18+ and may include adult conversations and topics.

If you do not meet the age minimum but still feel this opportunity is where you need to be, please feel free to reach out to Shirley Wong, our Operations Manager, at operations@velocitydancecenter.org
